How to do it, start to finish
The five-minute version
- Drop your PNG or JPG into the converter at the top of this page.
- Pick Logo / Text — it gives the cleanest cut paths. Use Black & White for a single-colour stencil or vinyl decal.
- Convert, then in the colour list hide the background layer so it does not become a cut line.
- Download the SVG and upload it in Design Space via Upload → Upload Image.
- The layers arrive separated and ready to cut — no Access needed.
Getting a cleaner cut
- Start big. At least 1000px on the longest side. A small or heavily compressed image makes the tracer follow JPEG noise instead of real edges, and you get jagged paths.
- Raise Simplify in Advanced options if the blade is chattering over too many tiny nodes.
- Lower Colour precision to merge near-identical shades into one layer — fewer weeding steps.
- Fine lettering and thin serifs are where cuts fail. Trace at high resolution, then check the smallest stroke before you commit vinyl to it.
In short
Uploading your own PNG to Cricut Design Space is free and needs no subscription.
But the Automatic Background Remover and the Multiple Layers option for multi-coloured images are both Cricut Access features, and Access is $9.99 a month.
Converting the image to SVG first sidesteps both: the layers are already in the file, so Design Space imports them separated and cuttable.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Cricut Access to upload my own images?
No. Uploading your own .jpg, .png, .bmp, .gif, .svg or .dxf file into Design Space is free. What Access gates is the Automatic Background Remover and the Multiple Layers option that separates a multi-coloured raster image into individual cut layers.
Why convert to SVG if Design Space accepts PNG?
Because an SVG already contains separate layers and real vector paths. A PNG upload arrives as one flattened shape unless you pay for Access, and its cut path is derived from pixels rather than from geometry, so it does not scale as cleanly.
Is this really free with no limit?
Yes. No account, no watermark, no cap on conversions, and commercial use is fine. The tracing engine runs on your own device, so there is no server cost to recover.
Which preset should I use for a Cricut cut file?
Logo / Text for most designs — it produces the cleanest, most cuttable paths. Black & White for a single-colour vinyl decal or stencil. Avoid the Photo / Art preset for cutting: it produces hundreds of layers that are impractical to weed.
How do I remove the background before cutting?
After converting, the colour list shows every layer in the result. Click the background layer to hide it, then download. The background never becomes a cut line, and you never needed the Access background remover.
Will the SVG work in Silhouette Studio or a laser cutter?
Yes. The output is plain, standard SVG — it imports into Silhouette Studio, Design Space, and laser software such as LightBurn. A Design Space raster upload, by contrast, only helps you inside Design Space.
My cut has jagged edges — what went wrong?
Almost always the source resolution. Aim for at least 1000px on the longest side with clean edges; a small or heavily compressed image makes the tracer follow compression noise. Raising Simplify in Advanced options also smooths paths that have too many nodes.
