GIF is capped at 256 colours, and for vector tracing that limitation is an advantage: fewer colours mean fewer colour regions, fewer paths and a smaller, tidier SVG than a photo would ever produce. Flat logos, pixel art, stickers and simple diagrams saved as GIF are among the best sources you can feed a tracer.

Can I convert an animated GIF?

The first frame is traced. An SVG produced here is a still vector, so the animation itself is not preserved — pick the frame you want by saving it out of your editor first.

Why does my GIF come out covered in tiny speckles?

Dithering. To fake extra colours, GIF scatters pixels of two shades, and the tracer sees every speckle as a shape. Raise Simplify or lower Colour precision in Advanced options and they disappear.

Is GIF actually a good format to vectorise?

For flat artwork, yes — the 256-colour limit keeps the path count low. For photographic GIFs the palette banding shows up as visible steps in the vector.

Can I keep the transparent background?

Yes. GIF transparency is flattened onto white for tracing, then you hide that background layer in the colour list before exporting.

What image resolution should I use?

Sharper is better. Aim for at least 1000px on the longest side, with clean edges and a plain background. Heavily compressed or tiny images make the tracer follow compression noise instead of real edges, which produces jagged paths.

Why is my SVG file bigger than the original image?

Because each shape is stored as a mathematical path. Photos and gradients produce thousands of paths. For a smaller file, use the Logo / Text preset, lower Color precision, or raise Simplify in Advanced options.

Can I edit the colors before downloading?

Yes. After converting, the palette lists every color layer. Click a swatch to recolour it — shading is preserved — or hide a layer to drop it entirely, such as removing a background before export.

Can I use the SVG files for Cricut or laser cutting?

Yes. The output is standard SVG that imports into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, and laser software. Use the Logo / Text preset for the cleanest cut paths, and remove the background layer first.

Do I own the converted files? Is there a watermark?
