Convert a BMP bitmap into a scalable SVG vector in your browser. BMP stores raw pixel data with no compression at all, which quietly makes it the best-behaved source a tracer can get — there are no JPEG blocks or WebP ringing artefacts for the engine to mistake for real edges.

That is why old scans, screenshots saved out of legacy Windows software and 16- or 256-colour clipart often vectorise better than a modern re-saved JPG of the same artwork. The only downside of BMP is file size, and size is not complexity: a 12 MB uncompressed bitmap of a two-colour logo traces to a tiny SVG.

Why does BMP trace better than JPG?

BMP is uncompressed, so every pixel is exactly what the original had. JPG throws away detail and leaves blocky ringing around hard edges, and the tracer faithfully follows that damage.

My BMP file is enormous — is that a problem?

No. File size and image complexity are different things. An uncompressed bitmap of a simple logo is large on disk but produces a small SVG with few paths.

Can I convert old Windows clipart?

Yes, and it is close to an ideal case. 16- and 256-colour BMPs have hard, flat colour regions with no anti-aliasing noise, which is exactly what a tracer wants.

What about a scanned BMP from a flatbed?

Use the Black & White preset. Its adaptive thresholding copes with the uneven lighting and paper texture that scans always carry.

What image resolution should I use?

Sharper is better. Aim for at least 1000px on the longest side, with clean edges and a plain background. Heavily compressed or tiny images make the tracer follow compression noise instead of real edges, which produces jagged paths.

Why is my SVG file bigger than the original image?

Because each shape is stored as a mathematical path. Photos and gradients produce thousands of paths. For a smaller file, use the Logo / Text preset, lower Color precision, or raise Simplify in Advanced options.

Can I edit the colors before downloading?

Yes. After converting, the palette lists every color layer. Click a swatch to recolour it — shading is preserved — or hide a layer to drop it entirely, such as removing a background before export.

Can I use the SVG files for Cricut or laser cutting?

Yes. The output is standard SVG that imports into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, and laser software. Use the Logo / Text preset for the cleanest cut paths, and remove the background layer first.

Do I own the converted files? Is there a watermark?
