Turn artwork into clean cut paths for your Silhouette in a few seconds, free and without uploading anything. One thing to know before you start, because it catches people out: SVG import in Silhouette Studio requires Designer Edition. The basic edition can open a traced SVG only after you convert it to another format first.

Beyond that, good cut files come down to path hygiene. Every colour layer is a separate cut, so fewer colours means less material swapping. Hide the background layer before exporting or the machine cuts a rectangle around everything. And anything smaller than a few millimetres will cut fine and then refuse to weed off the backing.

Does Silhouette Studio open SVG files?

Designer Edition and above do, directly. The free basic edition does not — that is a Silhouette licensing limit, not a problem with the file.

What if I only have the basic edition?

Open the SVG in Inkscape (free) and save it as DXF, which basic Studio accepts. You lose colour layer separation but keep the cut geometry.

How do I get rid of the background before cutting?

After converting, hide the background colour in the layer list and then export. Otherwise it exports as a real path and gets cut as a big outer rectangle.

How small can a detail be before it will not weed?

As a rough rule, thin strokes under about 2mm and isolated islands under about 3mm are painful to weed in vinyl. Raise Simplify before exporting to drop the specks that create that work.

Why is this tool different?

🛡️ Absolute privacy

No server at all — your images are processed in your browser via WebAssembly and never uploaded anywhere. Go offline and try it.

⚙️ Professional engine

The same tracing technology used in advanced design tools, running right in your browser with nothing to install.

✍️ Great with lettering

Excellent results with logos and calligraphy — including Arabic script — every stroke traced as clean, precise paths.

∞ Actually free

No signup, no conversion limits, no watermark — forever.

In short

12pixa converts PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP images into SVG vector files.

The tracing engine runs entirely inside the browser, so images are never uploaded to a server.

It is free and unlimited: no account, no watermark, and no cap on conversions, including commercial use.

Output is standard SVG that opens in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and cutting software such as Cricut Design Space.

Logos, lettering and line art give the best results; photographs become flat, poster-like art rather than an identical copy.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. You can go offline after the page loads and the tool keeps working normally.

What’s the difference between SVG and a regular image?

An SVG is a vector: scale it to any size — a billboard or a business card — with zero quality loss, and edit its colors and paths in design apps like Illustrator.

Does it work with Arabic calligraphy?

Yes, beautifully — letters, diacritics and ornaments are traced as precise, editable paths ready for print at any size.

Do photos convert into an identical vector?

Realistic photos become a flat poster-art style — no technology in the world turns a photo into an identical vector, because vectors are by nature color regions and paths.

How is this different from Vector Magic?

Vector Magic is paid and uploads your file to its servers. 12pixa is free, unlimited, and the tracing engine runs inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Quality is close but not identical — try both on the same image and compare.

Does it really work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, the engine is already in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet and keep converting — nothing is sent anywhere.

What image resolution should I use?

Sharper is better. Aim for at least 1000px on the longest side, with clean edges and a plain background. Heavily compressed or tiny images make the tracer follow compression noise instead of real edges, which produces jagged paths.

Why is my SVG file bigger than the original image?

Because each shape is stored as a mathematical path. Photos and gradients produce thousands of paths. For a smaller file, use the Logo / Text preset, lower Color precision, or raise Simplify in Advanced options.

Can I edit the colors before downloading?

Yes. After converting, the palette lists every color layer. Click a swatch to recolour it — shading is preserved — or hide a layer to drop it entirely, such as removing a background before export.

Can I use the SVG files for Cricut or laser cutting?

Yes. The output is standard SVG that imports into Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, and laser software. Use the Logo / Text preset for the cleanest cut paths, and remove the background layer first.

Do I own the converted files? Is there a watermark?

The file is yours — it is created on your device and never uploaded. No watermark, no account, no limit on how many you convert or what you use them for, commercial work included.

Which file formats can I convert?

PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. You can also paste an image directly with Ctrl+V. Output is always SVG, which opens in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and any modern browser.
